Professor Giuliano Cerulli is the Director of the Orthopaedic and Traumatologic Department and Chief of the Orthopaedics and Traumatology Residency Program and the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency Program of the University of Perugia, Italy. Dr. Cerulli received his medical degree at the University of Perugia in 1971, followed by a Residency in Orthopaedics and Traumatology in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and in Sports Medicine at the Catholic University of Rome in 1974.
Professor Cerulli was one of the first practitioners to identify the clinical importance of a functional, dynamic orthopaedic evaluation in addition to the traditional morphological-instrumental one. He also developed innovative arthroscopic surgical techniques (knee, shoulder, and ankle) and was the first to recognize the benefit of arthroscopic surgical treatment (with a technique that he developed) for acute anterior traumatic shoulder dislocations. He was also the first in Italy to perform arthroscopic operations for lumbar hernias. His most recent achievement was the development of the "All-Inside" technique for ACL reconstruction to overcome the disadvantages of hamstring grafts.
He is internationally recognized for his research in clinical orthopaedic biomechanics and has conducted extensive research on the risk of repetitive movements specific to a sport, especially those associated with football, basketball, and volleyball. His international research collaboration also includes working with the University of Umea, Sweden and the Clinical Surgical Veterinary Institute, University of Perugia, on basic and clinical research into cartilage lesions. Professor Cerulli also conducts research into gene therapy and knee ligament growth factor.
He is President of Let People Move, President of SIGASCOT (Italian Society of Knee Surgery, Arthroscopy, Sports Traumatology, Cartilage and New Orthopaedic Technologies) and Past President of EFOST (European Federation of Sports Orthopaedics and Traumatology National Societies) and SI.TRA.S (Italian Society of Sports Traumatology)
He is Co-Founder of the Nicola's Foundation, Onlus. He established the foundation to encourage international collaboration on scientifically important research projects, to promote the scientific application of biomedicine in medical training, to aid research in emerging countries and to promote campaigns to improve health.
